The HI-35930 from Holt Integrated Circuits is a CMOS integrated circuit designed to interface Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI)-enabled microcontrollers to the ARINC 429 serial bus. The device includes two receivers, each with user-programmable tag identification for any combination of 256 possible tags, a 32 x 32 receive FIFO, 3 priority tag fast access double buffer registers, and an analog line receiver. Both line receivers meet the lightning requirements for RTCA/DO-160G Section 22 Level 3 Pin Injection Test Waveform Set A (3 and 4), Set B (3 and 5A), and Set Z (3 and 5B), not Use additional external components. The HI-35930 is a replacement for Holt's popular HI-3593 and enables customers to add lightning protection capabilities to existing designs with minimal requalification or reuse of existing software in new designs.
A stand-alone transmitter has a 32 x 32 transmit FIFO and built-in line drivers. The line driver is powered from a single 3.3V supply and includes an on-chip DC/DC converter to generate the bipolar ARINC 429 differential voltage levels required to directly drive the ARINC 429 bus. The status of the transmit and receive FIFOs and priority tag buffers can be monitored using programmable external interrupt pins or by polling the status registers. The Serial Peripheral Interface minimizes the number of host interface signals, resulting in a small footprint device that can be connected to a variety of industry-standard microcontrollers that support SPI.
Other combinations of digital/analog receivers and transmitters are also available (see datasheet for details). One device variant (HI-35933) consists of a purely digital device capable of galvanic isolation using an external Holt line receiver (HI-8460) and lightning protection of the transmitter using an external Holt lightning protection line driver HI-8597.
