Vehicle electronics

After discovering that Programmable Logic Devices (PLDs) are very beneficial to the success of system suppliers and car manufacturers (Original Equipment Manufacturers), the automotive industry has started to adopt these devices in large numbers. Best-in-class PLD quality, a cost structure suitable for high-volume consumer applications, and improving system performance have allowed PLDs to enter the automotive market more quickly than other semiconductor products. Unlike ASSP and microcontroller solutions, the flexibility and time-to-market characteristics of PLDs are increasingly becoming key requirements in the automotive industry.

PLDs are already widely used in the infotainment and communications markets, as are emerging automotive driver assistance designs. In this area, some applications are developing very rapidly, including road departure warning, night vision and tire pressure monitoring system. PLD has a lower chip cost structure, rich intellectual property (IP) cores, reference designs, and longer product time-to-market, making it an ideal choice for the development of the automotive electronics market.

Altera's portfolio of automotive-grade semiconductors includes products not yet available from other PLD suppliers in the automotive market.

Consumer Electronics

The fast-growing consumer electronics market is seeing a plethora of new products such as flat-panel displays, portable media players, and home networking products. The features of these products are continuously enriched and greatly improved every year. For consumer electronics manufacturers adopting the latest technology, such rapid development has brought great competitive pressure on time. Using Altera's low-cost programmable logic and HardCopyASIC in the system, they can quickly realize product mass production without risk, help designers deal with continuous changes in a timely manner, and ensure that the project is completed as planned. Altera has a proven track record of delivering products in a timely and reliable manner, delivering millions of FPGAs and HardCopy ASICs to market—winning consumer electronics design.

Computer storage is developing rapidly. In traditional IT applications, servers and storage are directly interconnected, developing into a networked storage architecture, namely Storage Area Network (SAN). SAN is easy to implement storage expansion, and servers that were previously limited by internal storage capabilities can be expanded beyond existing conditions. In addition to easily expanding storage, servers have also evolved to enable fast and efficient data processing. Altera FPGA is an ideal choice to implement storage topology migration and help servers process data more quickly.

Innovative storage and server technologies require flexible platforms to quickly implement various solutions, while high-volume application markets require low-cost solutions. The use of Altera's low-cost programmable logic and structured ASICs in computers and storage devices can guarantee rapid ramp-up without risk. Driven by these storage networks, the explosive growth of traffic and data processing has led to an urgent need for high-performance chip and interface technologies. Altera's 65nm Stratix III FPGA highlights rich memory and serial interfaces in the architecture, which is very suitable for high-end storage applications.

Military Aviation

The premise of the Commercial Commercial in Service (COTS) program is that military programs can take advantage of new technologies and economies of scale using commercially available components, boards and systems.

While COTS has had some success, improvements are still needed. Commercial suppliers must be able to better serve the needs of the military and aerospace markets.

Altera's FPGA-enhanced COTS program helps meet these needs by ensuring that military project contractors can reduce risk and deliver very reliable systems that deliver on the promises made.

The Medical

Most medical products incorporate some type of semiconductor device. In fact, semiconductor devices are increasingly used in these products. The penetration rate of programmable logic devices (PLDs) is much higher than that of other types of semiconductor devices. PLDs are a powerful and viable alternative to ASICs and ASSPs in medical device development. During the design process, the PLD is reprogrammed as needed, which avoids the cost of front-end tape out (NRE), reduces the order quantity related to ASIC, and reduces the huge risk of multiple trial production of chips.

Compared with ASSP, PLD is very flexible in design and can realize circuit board level integration, which makes the product stand out among many competing medical equipment manufacturers. In addition, PLDs can be updated in the field as standards evolve or when requirements change. Moreover, designers can repeatedly use a common hardware platform to build different systems on the basis of a basic design to support various functions, thereby greatly reducing the generation cost. Whether it is designing CT or patient monitoring equipment, programmable logic devices can successfully implement system design, which is very flexible and risk-free. Compared with other medical equipment manufacturers, it is not only cost-effective, but also can highlight the value-added advantages of products.

Wireless Communication

The explosive growth of the Internet has led to an increasing demand for mass-market high-speed Internet access technologies. Wireless Internet access technologies are meeting this growing need by providing network access outside the home and office.

Broadband wireless access technology has great market potential, making the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) technology more and more popular. WiMAX 802.16e-2005 supports mobile high-speed Internet access within the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), using advanced signal processing schemes such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technologies. WiMAX 802.16e-2005, as a fixed wireless technology, will play an important role in new network implementations and emerging markets.

As semiconductor technology and signal processing advances, wireless standards and the systems themselves continue to evolve. This requires a flexible hardware platform that can provide wide processing bandwidth and has the advantage of timely market launch to meet these needs. Altera's programmable logic device (PLD) provides a high-performance product portfolio and low-cost FPGA, combined with low-cost HardCopyASIC risk-free migration technology, providing the required processing bandwidth and flexibility for wireless infrastructure design. To shorten time-to-market, Altera also offers a variety of intellectual property (IP), reference designs, and partner off-the-shelf solutions from Altera's wireless enablement systems.

Different requirements, so that you can continuously, conveniently and flexibly access the latest information on the website.

Mobile cellular communication has evolved from traditional analog systems to today's Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) 4G digital systems. For high-speed data services, the 3G+ standard enables higher peak data rates than 3G technologies such as W-CDMA and cdma2000. For example, High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) technologies increase W-CDMA's downlink and uplink data rates to 14.4 Mbps and 5.6 Mbps, respectively.

Industry

Flexible, reliable, and able to support multiple standards on the same platform, Altera FPGAs help you develop an adaptable and future-proof design methodology in industrial automation and process control products. From Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to Motion/Motor Controllers, I/O Modules, Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)/Operator Panels and Smart Drives, you can reconfigure products during development or even in the field.
